It is another election year for us here in Zambia and the big question is, "which way forward mother Zambia."
As we get closer and closer to the date, Let us be mindful of selfish leaders. We can see them from the way they are conducting their campaigns. I therefore encourage all the youths to use their votes wisely! Remember, your vote counts.
Good lucky mama Zeed.
Eric.

UNGASS Youth Summit Day1
About this event: AIDS 2006 – XVI International AIDS Conference About this category: Children’s Rights
|
Hi Everyone,
I'm currently attending the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on AIDS (UNGASS) 5 year Review (from May 31 - June 2), and UNGASS Youth Summit (May 29 - 30). The Youth Summit is being organized by the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA), Advocates for Youth and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). (There are too many acronyms!)
We hope to bring back lessons from the summit, to feed into youth activities for the upcoming conference in Toronto. It has been really amazing as there are over 65 youth from more than 25 countries attending the summit alone!
We had the opportunity to ask Dr. Peter Piot (Executive Director of UNAIDS) a lot of different questions and get up-to-date information on UNAIDS work around young people and HIV/AIDS; and the challenges of ensuring meaningful youth participation within HIV programming. As one participant put it, it's important to move away from having youth as merely 'accessories' or 'tokens' in programmes, but actually give the technical capacity to participate.
For me, a really important component of the day, was a presentation on evidence-based HIV prevention Interventions. (This will be part of a publication that will be launched in Toronto jointly by UNICEF, WHO and other organizations). I thought that this is particularly important as we are moving from simply documenting 'best practices' to actually stating what works, and can potentially be scaled up and have a more sustainable impact on prevention models
With half of all new infections occurring among young people and around 6,000 young people newly infected with HIV/AIDS - It is certainly time to act!

How are you helping children?
About this category: Children’s Rights
|
Culture and civilization has often times clashed in many societies in the world. Nations known for strict cultural adherences in Asia and Africa have looked down upon Western civilizations and those of their lineage that have adopted Western civilizations have been considered outcasts.
However, the shrinkage of the world due to instant communication and advanced and fast modes of travel have led to peoples of different cultures and societies get to know and appreciate other societies’ cultural values and civilizations.
While child labour in Asia and Africa has been appreciated and applauded as training for future family responsibilities, the same has been discouraged in Western civilizations as a serious hindrance to child health and development.
To date there is less appreciation and acceptance by especially rural dwellers of many African nations that children should not be involved in heavy domestic, farm and other forms of labour intensive activities.
In Zambia’s mumbwa district, an organization known as People’s Action Forum (PAF) in conjunction with the ILO/IPEC has embarked on a program of withdrawing young children involved in agricultural labour.
Being a rural setting, agriculture is the main economic activity in the area and has seen hundreds of children working on family agriculture holdings and commercial farms.
PAF was formed in August 1994 as an indigenous non-profit making non-governmental organization and has since grown with a membership of approximately 1,000 members around the country, most of whom are in the rural areas.
Working with whole communities, especially with their women and children, PAF’s approach is to help local groups realize that their development cannot be some abstract body’s responsibility, but their own; that rather than wait for Government to decide what they need, people should insist on being involved in the decision making processes for necessary redress of issues concerning their community’s welfare.
Let each one of us stop for a minute and ask ourselves what we are doing to help children. Remember, if we help them, they will help us.

YOU ARE BIGGEST DTERMINANT OF YOU OWN SUCCESS
About this category: Children’s Rights
|
This message is good for those that are at colleague, high school or school going at any learning institution. if you’re not any of these you s may still go ahead and read it and may be you may get to learn something new.
Yes……. I am saying that you the biggest determinant of your own success. I am not yet that successful and I not going to advise entirely from my own experience but from what I have come to learn in life and probably from other people’s lives as well. I do state time and again that life is a learning process that starts when you are born. Your syllabus ceases of course you die. Even the old folks are learning as well!
I have been to high school and now I am almost done with my degree at university. Whilst at high school I never used to study that much as I, with my other colleagues, believed that we were intelligent enough to pass exams upon quick perusing of notes. Thank God I passed with an inch as my colleagues failed with an inch! Whilst a 1st year student at university, I learnt from my young experience at high school and worked extremely hard enough to get to study Mechanical Engineering.
Now what’s the story? Thing is…. you hold what you want to be in life. I have seen people rise whilst others fall down at higher speeds that they rose with. Funny enough, people only smile and tend to hang around with those risen or those tending to rise. Everyone loves and enjoys good living and nowadays this is closely associated with having a lot of money or earning a lot of money. Once people realise that you got the bucks they will come running like doors for heaven are open for free! You will even see new faces accurately calling your highly revised name.
So what is it that you can do to find yourself in a better compromised situation? First let’s agree that good living is good and am talking about being able to get what you want when you need. Being able to pay for and take your children to better school you never went to. Being able to drive vehicles you only used admire when you were growing up. Being able to support others who need you financial help when you might have struggled to get school fees when you were at school. Being able to have a good wife or husband and children, all smiling because daddy or mummy loves them. Basically being able to solve many of yours and other peoples problems financially and socially. This is what I call being successful.
This is not easy to do but it’s possible. What then can you do to attain this stature?
- Know what you want and see if you really can get it e.g. your career
- Do not be influenced by your friends to diverge off your goals, but listen to their opinions. They may have seen something in you which you never saw in yourself and could be of help to you.
- Convince yourself that sweat now is better with sweet later and not the other way round. Realise that the little moneys you are busy entertaining your friends with is because of someone else’s hard working and mainly not yours.
- When you feel lazy to study remember to tell yourself that the payoff is ‘failure and ultimate poverty with few friends’.
- Don’t do drugs or indulge yourself in promiscuity. These can cut short your life and no matter how intelligent you are, you won’t reach the shore of success
- Find a partner who is determined to work hard and make it in life. together you will encourage each other and work in the positive way for your mutual benefit
- Remember once you get your good education and a good paper say degree, no one can get it from you, not even thieves! It’s all up in the heard! Rather everyone will come all wanting to get you so that you can work for them.

Some 10 Bad manners in Public, for now!
About this category: Children’s Rights
|
· Never urinate in public as you pause a public nuisance. In some countries this is a crime and you can be arrested and fined if not jailed for it.
· Don’t spit in public. I stopped when my sputum landed on my neighbour’s chick, a floor under my university apartment. Instantly I requested him to come and cut off my neck if he so desired. I was lucky though as he brushed the saliva and the issue itself aside as he was a close friend of mine.
· Sneezing and blowing of noses is normally allowed but you should mind your ‘neighbours’. They are not part of you! Imagine you just had your tasty pizza and you get on the bus for home. Before the engine roles I get on and I sit next to you. Seconds later I blow my nose like its trumpet in an orchestra! …and by the way never use tissue when blowing your nose. Its small dusty particles may just perpetuate your flue.
· Never ignore the presence of elders in public. In fact respect them; give them a sit if they you find yourself sitted whilst they are made to stand and if you are a guy give that sit to a lady too! Never speak to elders with those hands in your pockets. Give them the due respect they desire at all times, weather they are strangers or familiar persons to you. Most religions prescribe this code of conduct am you should find it to understand.
· Don’t shout in public. The public belongs to all of us and should therefore be respected. Drunkards’ are good and usually take undue advantage. Whistling is not advised, as it is an imitation of shouting. But feel free to shout or whistle at the stipulated places like sports grounds!
· Never cut in on queues, were people are have to be served. Everyone is human and all need that extra time you are squeezing in front for. In fact cutting-in is an infringement of someone else’s right, at least according to me.
· Don’t through rubbish in public. Find a garbage-disposing place or curry that dirt with to your bin or ditch at home. That way you will not contribute to pollution, which is a threat to the environment.
· Never cut your nails in public. What gathers under your fingernails leaves much to be desired and no one is interested in seeing you pocking that and the umbrella nails.
· Never take off your shoes if they smell, in public. That pungent smell from the stocking is probably bad for one with Bronchitis or indeed any other persons.
· Fatting in public is the most embarrassing thing one would what to remember you about. Bad smells are so irritating to others next to you and although ‘fats’ are colourless they have a high gluing tendency in people’ minds anmd you will surely be remembered.
